The Roman Legion was one of the finest fighting forces the world has known. Disciplined, ordered, and well-organized, it was filled to the brim with seasoned soldiers who knew their way around a weapon due to years of training with a Wooden Gladius. Wooden swords are not unique to one culture or the other. The ability to train safely facilitated the wide-spread use of wooden weapons the world over, because they limited training injuries to mere blunt-force injuries - bruises, aches, and a cracked bone were preferable to bleeding, possible dismemberment, and potential death.
